Money Saving Plans for Foreign Students

Saving money (sparen) while in college can be an extremely difficult task, especially for students enrolled in colleges and universities outside of their home country. Foreign students generally incur more expenses than their counterparts due to the requirement of health insurance and transportation.

There are ways for international students to conserve their funds to assure that they will have a promising and secure future.

Millions of dollars are given in scholarships each year for international exchange students. The Overseas Association for College Admission keeps a complete registry of colleges and universities, which includes the average grant award and total expenditure for each establishment, along with information of many sponsored international students.

A database of U.S. scholarships and study grants, which includes the Fulbrights, is upheld by the Institute of International Education. The Fulbright Program was founded in 1946 to help teachers, doctoral students, and graduate students to teach or study in any country. It was created to bring together the sharpest minds across the world to allow an educational and cultural exchange, and continues to help international students and teachers study and teach abroad.

Foreign students looking to save money for later years (spaarrente overzicht) should consider opening a savings account. A number of financial institutions offer specialized savings accounts for students. These accounts generally have a higher interest rate than traditional accounts. Online savings accounts offer the most promising terms for students because they are easy to access and have the highest interest rate possible. Students holding savings accounts are given added benefits such as no monthly fees and no minimum balance.

Although there are many ways to save money, a few ideas are more rewarding for foreign students. Grants and scholarships awarded to students every year help to pay for college, which can put a person’s mind at ease about finances. Being a foreign student can be scary, but with the resources available today, saving money is becoming much easier for students internationally.
