The Basics of Choosing a Domain Name

When building a website, it is important to have a domain name picked out. You need to have a relevant name. Often choosing the right domain name can be a bit taxing. Some people find themselves lost when it comes to choosing a domain name. They have no clue where to begin. Choosing a domain sure is tough but if you do it step by step and think it through, it shouldn’t be all that difficult.

So how do you choose a name that fits for your domain?
If you stick to the basics, you shouldn’t falter, in fact you will realize that finding a name that fits will be fairly easy.

To begin with list all that your site will be dealing with. List its goals and plans. Write out names that reflect or suggest what your site is about. Pick names that will most likely appear in search engines. Choose a name that isn’t too long, it should not exceed more than about 30 characters, under seven characters is also not recommended. Restrict the domain name to a word or two, avoid making it a sentence. Remember that your domain name posses the key to your website. You want it to be accurate and more importantly you want people to remember it. Choose a name in accordance to the website your building. If it is a business website, make sure the name sounds business like. The only way you can guarantee your self a good amount of traffic is by choosing a domain name that is likely to be a keyword for many search engines. The domain name should be the theme of the site you are setting up.

Do not copy other existing domain names; it will only get you in to legal trouble which will do you more harm than good. You could try auction domains for other ideas. You may not want to have a domain name that possesses hyphens as well. They tend to get hard to remember, especially if there are three or four words involved. Stick with easy to remember names. The short and sweet ones always work like a charm. That’s exactly what you want for your domain name. When choosing a domain name, make sure you spell it right, incase there are variations to the spelling, you may want to consider registering the sites with all the possible variations of the spelling of your domain name. this way you will not lose traffic because there is a difference in spellings!
