Mastering Internet Basics

The Internet has been around since the dawn of time. Ok we all know that is not true. However when you sit and think about it, the average person has been able to access the web for over 20 years. The problem is many people still have problems mastering Internet basics. You may want to know what some of the basics are. Here are a few.

Search engines: There are still those people who do not know what a search engine can really do. These nifty programs actually hunt down information and put it in files so you have easy access to them. The first search engines just filed the main page title. Now they can search the pages and file each word into a category for easier access. For instance, you may want to find Norwegian Elk Hounds. There are thousands of pages on the Internet which offer tons of information on this subject. When the Internet was the World Wide Web, you may have been presented with information on anything Norwegian. With the search engines, now you will get information on the dog. By typing in the search box, your query, or what you are looking for, the search engine will find pages upon pages of information on the subject.

E-mail: The e-mail systems today can be a great asset to anyone who wants to stay in contact with someone anywhere in the world. You can gather e-mail addresses like you do phone numbers. Many people who would never sit and write a letter will type an e-mail. You can send jokes, photos, and even videos in an e-mail. Many of the Internet service providers offer free email services.

Blogging: This has become the number one source of information for many people. Blogging is short for Web Log. This is like an on line diary. You can get a free blogging site and start writing about things you know. Many people have made some great money by blogging, or just writing what they know. There are blogs about cooking, gardening, and even flying. Certain companies use blogs to stay in contact with the public to inform the consumer of new products or other information. Even the presidential candidates are using blogs to rally the voter's support.

Dot Com's: You can even open your own business on the Internet. All you need is a website. You can get one free from places like Yahoo's Geo Cities, or you can pay for a company to host one for you. This means you create a page and put it on someone else's main frame computer. This is a very simple explanation, but it works for our purposes here. You can offer anything you like on your web page. If you write a cookbook and want to sell it, you can. You may make homemade soaps you think others might like. You can sell them on a web site. The dot com is more common but there are other endings also. The dot gov is usually used by the federal government web sites. Dot org can be seen at the end of most non profit organizations.

Social Networking Sites: These are web sites which allow you to interact with other people you have something in common with. There are several very popular ones. MySpace and Facebook are two of them. Using these sites are free. You can make them personal with pictures and sayings. People can send you e-mails through these sites. They can also leave comments on your site for you to read. The debate rages on as to whether these sites are actually of any use.

When you are more familiar with mastering Internet basics, you can become a part of a community which reaches around the globe. You can meet fascinating people and view wonderful sights without even leaving your chair.
